Cincinnati 26 Pittsburgh 23

harpermiss
I didn’t have the chance to catch the Cincinnati-Pittsburgh live due to outside constraints. Luckily, DVRs were invented for this very purpose. So for the second time this week, your hero will watch a Cincinnati at Pittsburgh game off his DVR and write all about it. Isaiah Pead’s box hair cut is cool. I don’t have much for an intro, so let’s get to the action. Pictures via Cincinnati.com/AP.

Cincinnati gets the ball first. Lots of yellow. RDA IV gets a short return to only the 16. Zombie Collaros leads the team out. John Goebel called him that, that means it’s cool. Pass batted and should have been picked. Williams couldn’t quite corral that one. Pead right and a huge play, cuts past a man and all the way down to the Pitt 30. God I love that man. Zombie rolls throws to Robinson for 13 or so. Ball at the 19. Winn gets a carry, but only gets 2. UC going quick. Pass to the end zone, looked like McClung was held, but no flag. 3rd and 8. Zombie threw that one a bit too far out frong. And a timeout. 5 receiver set. Pass caught by Thompkins, who gets a bum spot a yard short. Tony Miliano looks 12 in his picture. He drills a 28 yard FG. Cincinnati 3 Pittsburgh 0.

Jackson waits to retun. From the 7 he breaks it to the 34, 35 depending on the spot. Give to Zach Brown is snuffed out for a loss by Big John Hughes. Sunseri throws right, but just out of reach. 3rd and 12. Pressure, Sunseri takes off and gets 14. I said he scrambles, and no one read my blog. Brown bulls his way for 7 on first down. Reverse to Street, and he runs inside the UC 30. Ronald Jones on a wildcat is stopped by Rob Trigg. Sunseri throws over the middle to Hubie Graham to make up for the loss and a yard more. 3rd and 9. I forgot I was recapping a second ago. Sunseri goes down. Chris Williams and Brandon Mills got that one. 52 yard FG by Harper is good. 9:48 to go in the first quarter. Cincinnati 3 Pittsburgh 3.

RDA IV breaks the kick return to the 40. Nice one. I like roman numerals better than 4. It’s classier. Bearcats Blog, the Bearcats blog that is classy. Pead a run for 4. Collaros throws deep down the middle to Anthony McClung to the Pittsburgh 28. Nice job. Pead brought down by a loss by Alecxih. Collaros rolls right past pressure and throws it away. He’s learning. Zombie takes off on 3rd down, but is about 5 yards short of first down. It’s Miliano time. 40 yard FG is true. 7:23 left in the first. Cincinnati 6 Pittsburgh 3

Jackson drops the kick, and is swamped at the 10. Looked like Pat Lambert was in on that stop. I’ve got a zit that was not there earlier today. Dammit. Pass to someone gets 9. Brown bulls his way to the 25 and a first down. Sunseri fakes, hit as he threw, but completes to Street at the 45. Giordano had the pressure. Sunseri takes off left for 2. Mills on the stop. Brown up the middle for nothing. Mills is very active today. Sunseri dumps off to 3, who gets to within 3 yards of the marker. Pitt will punt. Drane on the tackle. Yoklic knocks it out at the 10. Pead takes the first down carry for 8 yards up the gut. Pead again for 3. Zombie hits Thopmkins at the 30 for 8. Screen to DJ and he drops it. That bubble screen is evil. 3rd and 2. 0 back set. Timeout. Different set now. Collaros keeps it, gets the first down to the 35. Pead breaks right to the 40. Flag on the play. Holding on Travis Kelce. Ball at the 25. Zombie gives to the Pead, who busts his way to the 37. Middle screen to DJ loses yards. 3rd and 10. DJ Woods has not had a memorable senior season so far. Zombie audibles. He throws a screen to Winn that gets stopped for another loss. Punt bounces to the 23. New paragraph? Yeah. Pitt ball at the 23. Sunseri throws in the flat to Gonzalez for 3. That’s the end of the first quarter. Maybe. Yes. Pitt tries a run, but JK All Day makes the stop. I’ll stop that nickname. I promise (I don’t promise). Sunseri throws to Street, who crosses to the sideline and a big gain. JK can not catch Street. 33 yards. Wildcat by Jones gets to the 22. That was ridiculous. 19 yards. This defense gives up yards in giant chunks. Only really hurt in 1 game. UC lost big in that 1 game. Sunseri to pass, steps up and runs for 3. That zit is really pissing me off. I might cut it with my razor. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Bennett gets a run for 3. 3rd and 4. Out of the gun, slant to the 11. That’s a play you run in NCAA 11 to similar success. First down. Playaction, Dan Giordano is on his ass and Sunseri throws it away. Giordano has had a nice game. WR screen to Jones gets to the 7. Shotgun, corner route is over thrown. FG time. 24 yarder is good. 11 minutes in the half. Cincinnati 6 Pittsburgh 6.

Entertaining tilt so far. Short kick taken by Jameel Poteat across the 35. Good to see him back. Happy he got a touch back in his home state. Yay, Poteat. Shotgun, fake, pressure, picked off, Collaros is down, return inside the 10. Oh my god. Zombie held that ball too long. Then he made a bad throw. Todd Thomas the pick. I’m worried about Zach. I almost want to go on twitter and see if he’s ok. Ball at the 4. He looks ok. Bootleg, easy score for Sunseri. That was bad, bad, bad all around. 10:35 to go in the half. Pittsburgh 13 Cincinnati 6.

collaroshurt

Kick comes to RDA IV, he bobbles it and only gets to the 15. Ugh. He’s not had a great day. Collaros is a zombie so he can not die, and he proves it by hitting McClung, who runs for a big play for 14. Pead up the middle to the 33. Pass to Thompkins, turned up to the 42. First down. Pead stuck for a loss. Zombie throws to McClung who is knocked out right at the marker. First down. Nice game for McClung. Ball at the Pitt 49. Fake, pass to Thompkins, spins out of a tackle, turns up for 9. ZC runs a draw for 3. Move the sticks, bitch. I found out on Jeopardy last night that Pittsburgh is the most misspelled city. You’re welcome. Pead has a big hole up the middle, but slips after 9. That could have been much more. Ok, maybe like 5 yards more. Pead the carry, and he fumbles. Sigh. Wait, knee was down. Review this sir. They do. Cincinnati ball. Pitt fans think it’s a fumble because they are stupid, unlike us. Dummies. It’s 1:30 in the morning by the way. Ball at the 28. Zombie to pass, steps up in the pocket and throws a jump pass to Pead, who turns right and bursts inside the 15. Kid’s a player. Reverse to DJ, taken to the 7. I think UC ran that because Pitt did. Haven’t run the reverse that much this year. QB run left side, and he’s all the way in. TD Zombie. 5:45 left in the half. Cincinnati 13 Pittsburgh 13

Kick time. Everyone’s favorite time. Buddy Jackson waiting for the kick. From the 2  to the 14. Orion Woodard makes the stop. He’s a special teams lynch pin. One word or two? I’m guessing two. I hope this doesn’t come off weird on Monday. Screen to Ronald Jones, who slips and slides for 14 yards. Stewart missed a tackle. Brown runs for 9. He took a big hit at the end of that. Sunseri breaks out of a sack, and runs for 5. Corner blitz got there quick, but Williams couldn’t wrap him up. More pressure on Sunseri by Giordano, pass thrown away. That’s at least the second time the play by play guy called him Collaros. Racist. Pass to Shanahan, who has been at Pitt for 8 years. Interesting flag, because Pitt had the 1st. It’s on UC. Declined. Wolfe couldn’t get off the field in time. Bennett runs for 2. Stewart threw him down viciously. Chill, Walt. Sunseri throws to Brown, who dives down inside the 30. He didn’t want to get hit there. The defense has not been good today. Sunseri scrambles for 3. Wildcat is handed off. Walter Stewart was on that one for a 5 yard loss. Under 2 min left. Sunseri steps up, runs and takes a hit by Mills after 4. Kick time. UC not taking timeout. Harper is good from 42. 1:08 in the half. Pittsburgh 16 Cincinnati 13

Kick time again. Short. Poteat from the 15 to the 26. 1:04 left. 2 timeouts. There should be more time left and 1 timeout remaining. Oh well. Hand to Pead, who goes right for 7. Odd playcall. I guess Butch is fine going into the half trailing. Pead got 6 actually. He got a lot more than that on a run across the 45. But a hold on Alex Hoffman. Now UC is going to be fine going into the half trailing. Under 20 seconds left. Ball at the 22. Run up the middle to Pead. He gets 4. Halftime. Pittsburgh 16 Cincinnati 13.

Kick time, America’s favorite time. A horrible kick off by Pat O’Donnell is short and goes out of bounds. He must have slipped or something. Pitt ball at the 40. Shotgun for Tino, pass to Street across midfield. Street has had a nice game. Brown up the middle and no one touches him until the 20. He’s dragged down at the 10. Totally blown out of the water on that run. 36 yards. Cheatham finally got him. He dragged Drew Frey 10 yards. Screen to Street inside the 5. Shotgun handoff up the middle. Stupid. No gain. You don’t run that fancy shit in short field situations. Play fake pass to Hubie for the TD. He crossed behind the line and JK all day couldn’t catch up to him. Good playcall. Tino is 13-17, 148. Ugh. 13:21 in the 3rd. Pittsburgh 23 Cincinnati 13.

America’s time. Short kick taken at the 15 to across the 25 by IV. Yeah, he’s IV now. Zombie throws short to Pead, who can only get barely across the line of scrimmage. ZC hands to Pead, who gets across the 30. Pead had over 100 yards the first half. Didn’t seem like he did much besides the 2 big runs. I guess 2 runs is all it takes. I’m dumb. 3-7. Pressure and sacked by Brandon Lindsey. That was a quick route, but no one was open. Hooey gave him the OLE treatment. Punt time. Nearly blocked. Ball rolls dead at the Pitt 32. Let’s keep it in the same paragraph. Screen to Street somehow gets 5, even though they’ve run that play like 4 times. Flag down. Block in the back by Shanahan. 10 yarder. The fans don’t agree. 1st and 20. The fans never agree. Pump fake, run up the middle for 4. Sunseri is not getting sacked because he’s just stepping up and running. JK gave him a huge hit. Pass is lobbed up for Brown incomplete. Stewart could have picked that off. Hit his shoulder pad. 3rd and long. Let’s get off the field, D. Sunseri tucks and runs to the 35. It’s punt time. I think we’ll go for a new paragraph after the return. Seems like a good thing. I’m not fast forwarding between plays, so you get commentary like this. Nearly blocked. Milligan muffs it, then falls on it at the 16. Millgian kind of sucks at punt returns. No, he actually sucks. Sorry for saying he should return kicks. What’s Dyjuan Lewis doing? New graph.

Ball at the 17. Pressure comes, ZC throws it away. He laid on the field for a second after. He’s taken some hits the past couple of games. Good thing he’s undead. Play fake throwback to DJ, who gets inside the 40. 44 yard play. That’s the same play UC ran against Akron, and Miami, and someone else. Love that play. Ball at the Pittsburgh 39. IV gets a carry, getting to the 32. Of course his grandfather is mentioned. Drink your drinks. Probably coffee or something since this is up on Monday morning. Pead runs for 2. The announcer called IV “Quatro.” I kind of like it. 3rd and 1. QB keeper right is blown up by Pitt, ZC tries to go left, but loses a yard or two. The right side of the line didn’t move on the snap. UC going for it. Timeout first by Pitt. UC is going to pass. Slant to Thompkins for the first down. That’s the NCAA 11 slant. Ball at the 25. Going deep…. just out of the reach of Thompkins. I just got a crazy case of deja vu. Weird. Pead run to the 20. 3rd and 5. Interesting call here. UC 23 runs, 22 passes. Pitt 25 runs, 18 passes. Rolling left, weird jump pass to the middle to skinny Binns, who breaks a tackles and gets inside the 10. I like Alex Chisum a lot. Pead tries going right, but it’s blown up. Ball now at the 8. The right side of the line has been dominated. 5 receiver set. Blindside sack by Smith. He came off the right side. Hooey didn’t even get up before Smith was by him. Hooey is not playing well. 3rd down and UC going the wrong way. Pressure, steps up, lobs into the end zone, but it’s batted down in the back of the zone by Taglianetti. That was a nice play. Dude went up. America’s time. Tony is good from 32. 3:57 left in the 3rd quarter. Pittsburgh 23 Cincinnati 16.

USA time. Buddy Jackson time. I actually spelled Taglianetti right on the first try. Good job, handsome. Kick to the goalline, taken to the 18. Beal made the tackle. Brown up the middle on first down. The thing that surprises me most about the Big East standings, besides USF and Louisville, is that Syracuse is 1-3. Thought they would be better. Short pass gets about 6. 3rd and 2. A three and out would be nice here. QB option, fumble. Stewart forced it and recovered it. UC ball at the 27.

Pead to the 25. Pass to a wide open McClung, he’s met at the 5, taken down at the 3. That was wiiiiiiide open. 17-25, 195 for Zombie. QB run gets in the end zone. 3 yard run. We are tied. 1:48 in the 3rd. Cincinnati 23 Pittsburgh 23.

Looking at the replay, UC faked the bubble screen. That was a nice call. Party in the USA time. Pitt gets it to the 24. Bennett busts up the middle across the 35 to the 38. Big run. Pass in the flat is blown up by Chris Williams. Nice job, Chris. Pitt moved. 2nd and 15. Pass batted at the line and picked off by Cam Cheatham. That pass was going into double coverage anyway. Stupid throw. Big play Cam. Big play Walter Stewart. UC has the ball at the 26. Collaros goes deep, but too deep for DJ. Pead run up the middle for 3. That’s the end of the 3rd quarter. Collaros to throw on 3rd, and Thompkins can’t quite bring it in. Jones wanted an interference call. That could have been one. Maybe. 41 yard attempt. Put your hands up, they’re playing our song. 14:49 to go in the game. Cincinnati 26 Pittsburgh 23.

miliano

Kick dropped at the 20, Jackson can only get to about the 24. Lucky that was a short kick. Sunseri with a hell of a play fake on a QB option, and gets about 20. Zone read and everyone went inside. 25 yards officially. Bennett across midfield. Pass to Street, who takes it to the 39. That’ll move the sticks. Street is annoying tonight. 6 catches, 84 yards. Slot option pass by Jones to a wide open Shanahan. Flag down. I originally wrote Glag. Pitt had a man down field. That’s gonna hurt. I like it because that was a good play. Only 5 penalties this game. Short pass to Brown loses yards. Chris Williams has been freaking everywhere. Him and Walter Stewart. Quick pass was in the hands of Maalik Bomar, and he dropped it. That was a touchdown. 3rd and long. Pressured out of the pocket, wrapped up by Wolfe and he throws it away. That should be a grounding. It is. Good play, Derek Wolfe. Mills busted up the pocket, Wolfe was triple teamed, but got away from it to make the play. Punt is to the 5. For some reason Milligan fair caught it. C’mon son. That’s just not smart. Ball just outside the 5. Pead gets stuffed at the line. For some reason I’m not nervous about this game. I don’t know who wins. Pead up the middle again for 2. This is kind of a big 3rd down and 8. Collaros to pass, steps up and carries a lineman just enough for the first down. That was a big run. At the least you can get some better field position flipping. It’s under review. It’s overturned, and now it’s 4th down. Forget two sentences ago. Punt time. Kick time. America time. Taken at the 36 to the 44. 49 yard punt, 8 yard return. Let’s stay here. Sunseri gives to Brown, John Hughes gives Brown a loss. Quick pass to Brown is stopped for a loss by Deven Drane. He does a funny dance. 3-14. Sunseri takes off all the way to the UC 49. Interesting to see if Pitt is going to go for it. I think that I would. 4 and about 3. No, they punt. It goes into the end zone. Touchback.

8:30 on the clock with UC at the 20. ZC back with Winn, pass to Kelce, who takes it for 16. Nice play. Pead has 10 yards this half, now it’s 14 after a run. Pead again, now he has 18 yards. 3rd and 1 or 2. I guess 1. Quick pass is batted down by Alecxih. I like his name. It’s cool. I hate that batted pass. I wonder how weird this write up is going to look when I edit it later. Punt is fair caught at the 25. It was actually dropped, but Shanahan fell on it immediately. Sunseri tried a quick pass that was nearly picked by Stewart. That would have been incredible. Quick pass to the opposite shoulder Street turned to. Street turned inside, pass was to the sideline. 3rd and 10. Pass is low. Punt time. I like how UC puts the fists up. It has swag. Sunseri now 18-27 for 167. Low snap, but the punt goes to the 26. Good punt.  Pead gets the first down carry, and is brought down for a loss. Under 6 minutes left. I’m kind of nervous now. Screen to Pead gets about 4. Pead was hidden in the line, and that pass was scary. Collaros is picked off as he stares down Thompkins. That was bad, and possibly into double coverage. It was into double coverage. Now I’m very nervous. Ball at the 40. Bennett for 3. Bennett again for 1. Odd playcalling. 4 minutes left. Sunseri pressured, and has to throw it in the turf. Pitt has to go for it. 4th and 6. 3:42 left. Come on defense. Pitt calls their second timeout. Here we go. Shotgun. Don’t know what that play was, besides a failure. Sunseri threw a horrible ball there.

3:37 left. Collaros run left for a yard. Tick tick tick. Zombie run right gets to the 40. 3rd and 6. I would suspect the same play again. I would throw it to convert. UC runs the clock to 2:10 and calls timeout. Play fake, going deep and broken up by Reed. Went for the deep ball, but you didn’t need that. You just needed to convert. Punt time. America’s time. Bringing the block. Didn’t get it. Ball dies at the 11. 47 yard punt. Nice job. Running into the kicker on Pitt. It’s only a 5 yard penalty, but there is a lot of discussion. That was a cheap flag, by the way. Good job acting by Pat. The penalty is declined.

1:56 to go. Pittsbugh has the ball at the 11. They need only 3 to tie. 8-16, 36 yards for Sunseri this half. Just get a pick and end this. Back to pass, pressure, Sunseri breaks and gets to the 15. So close to a sack. Tino got out of bounds. Pass to Gonzalez for 5. 1:40 left. Pass over the middle to Street to the 33. UC was hoping for a flat pass. Sunseri is sacked by Hughes, and throws the ball. They call that a fumble and UC has it. Whaaat. That was clearly a pass attempt. Under review. And it’s overturned. Someone it’s only 2nd and 10 and no grounding is called. That’s a load of shit. 1:19 left. Sunseri is sacked by Derek Wolfe. He grabbed Sunseri around the throat with his forearm it looked like. A clothesline.

wolfesack
Timeout Pitt. 3rd and 16. 1:11 left. Here we go. Sunseri steps up and hits Street for 20. Damn. 1:02 left. Ball at the 47. Pass to Brown and he bulls to the UC 42. Damn again. Pass to Gonzalez for like 4, but he was inbounds. 30 seconds and ticking. Snap at 26, going deep, and incomplete. That was kind of scary. 19 seconds left. Just a bit high for Gonzalez. 3-7. Blitz. Pass to Brown, who is out a yard short. 14 seconds left. 50 yard FG time. Timeout UC. Kick up and deep and no good. He missed it right. Fuck yes. Zombie goes in victory formation. Cincinnati 26 Pittsburgh 23

Thoughts

1cincinnatilogo9Tony Miliano was the man. 4-4 on FGS, nailed his extra points. He was the CFAA placekicker of the week. He wouldn’t take all the praise on twitter, but he definitely deserves it. Ask Alabama’s kicker if he wishes he went 4-4 Saturday night.

1cincinnatilogo9Chris Williams only had 4 tackles, but 2 were for loss. 1 of those was a sack. It seemed like he was everywhere though.

1cincinnatilogo9Same goes for Walter Stewart. Dude was all over Sunseri. Tino even said that the fumble was the turning point of the game.

1cincinnatilogo9Very solid game out of the receivers. McClung had the majority of yards, 73, but everyone seemed to make a play when the ball came their way.

1cincinnatilogo9I said it in the recap, I’ll say it now. God, I love Isaiah Pead. I wouldn’t trade him for anyone, not even a healthy Ray Graham.

1cincinnatilogo9The defense didn’t want to lose this game. They shut Pitt down the second half after the big scoring drive to start it. This isn’t the same defense that Tennessee shreaded. That’s for damn sure. Giordano, Wolfe, Monte Taylor, Brandon Mills, Stewart, guys were after the quarterback all game long. No sitting around, like against Tennessee.

1cincinnatilogo9We all held our breath when Zach Collaros went down, but he only earned the nickname even more. A human QB doesn’t come back from that. A zombie QB gets up. Zombie Collaros got up.

1cincinnatilogo9He also earned the bad part of the Zombie nickname by making a couple of questionable throws. West Virginia is gonna be a shootout. Can’t have that happen. You are better than that, Zombie. I believe in you. We believe in you.

1cincinnatilogo9One last time before the box score, Tony Miliano was the man. The. Man. Here’s his picture again.
