Bearcats Land First Offensive Line Commitment

Back in January, one of the first stories to come out about Coach Tommy Tuberville was the situation with Coach Jason Hall from Massillon High School. This was one of many negative reports being published about Coach Tuberville and his staff. In the article, Coach Hall even went on record saying that “Cincinnati will not be allowed back in Massillon on our campus as long as Jason Hall is in Massillon.” This did not look good for the future of Cincinnati Bearcats recruiting up in the area since Massillon is a powerhouse in Ohio high school football and puts out many Division 1 athletes every year. However, on June 8th the Cincinnati Bearcats added its eighth commitment of the 2014 class with Nathaniel Devers from none other than Massillon High School.

I don’t think many people expected the Bearcats to get a verbal from a player from Massillon less than a year removed from Jason Hall’s threat to the UC program. This could mean one of two things: 1) Jason Hall took back his threat to the UC program and allowed Coach Clickscale and Coach Hiller to come in and talk to Devers or 2) Devers had an interest in UC and made all contact on his own. I’m going to place my bet on the first since I believe Hall realized that he shouldn’t come in the way of a player’s recruitment and allows his players to talk to UC again. He hasn’t made a comment about the Devers commitment so it is only speculation at this point of his reaction.

Devers is listed at 6’5” and 275 lbs which already puts him at a good size to come in and contribute since most of our offensive linemen are at a similar build. If anything he will need to add between 10-20 lbs to get him ready to fill in the ranks for an offensive line that ranked among tops in the Big East last year. Devers also has offers from Akron, Bowling Green, UConn, Indiana, Toledo and others. Hopefully Devers is the first step to a reconnection between the Cincinnati – Massillon ties that were beginning to take shape.

Recruiting Tidbits

This past weekend the Bearcats had a series of 4 camps for high school prospects. Many came to the Cincinnati camps in an attempt to get a Cincinnati offer. This allowed the coaching staff to evaluate some of the players in the region. One such player came to camp and walked away with an offer.

Drue Tranquill, a 6’2” 200lb Safety/ Outside Linebacker was offered by the staff on June 8th.  He also has offers from Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Indiana State and Miami (OH).  At his Purdue visit, he recorded two straight 4.49 40s so he a speedster.

Another camp attendee that could be a big name in the coming year is class of 2015 OLB Darrin Kirkland Jr. He only has an Akron offer but is drawing interest from Cincinnati, Indiana, Ohio State and Louisville. A third player to keep an eye on is Jacques Patrick and Kevin Willis. Patrick is a 4-star ATH/RB from Florida and Willis is a center from Indiana that looks like Indiana is his leader. Hopefully we can make an impact on these young men this week.

On the other hand, some players that committed to UC have also attended camps this past weekend. This was the case with First Coast Defensive Ends Spencer Williams and Raashed Kennion. The two teammates camped at Auburn over the past weekend and both received offers stemming from their impressive workouts. Auburn will be their second BCS offer and it isn’t known what the players think of their new offers. On a positive note, this just shows that this staff has an eye for talent.

This past week there have been 4 offers from the staff. They are:

  • Billy Ray Mitchell, OL from New Jersey
  • Tegray Scales, LB from Colerain High School
  • Chris Jones, WR from Maryland
  • T.L. Ford, WR from Georgia
